The lawsuit filed today by Lambda Legal and OutServe-SLDN against the Department of Defense on behalf of Sgt. Nick Harrison, a military service member living with HIV, is a reminder that misconceptions surrounding HIV infection continue to contribute to stigma and discrimination and compromise the rights of people living with HIV. Today treatment with highly effective antiretroviral medicines allows people living with HIV to live long, healthy and productive lives while also stopping transmission of the virus. As infectious diseases and HIV specialists, we stand behind the principle that no one should be excluded from any opportunity, including from military service, on the basis of their HIV status.
